Detection of Internal Pores in Ti6Al4V Powder

1. Detection Method: Metallographic Analysis

2. Principle: Detect internal appearance of powder using metallographic microscope.

(Remark: Black spots on powder are resin adhesive used for fixture.)

Conclusion: No obvious internal pore in particle of powder samples was found.

Conclusion: No obvious crack on particle of powder samples was found. Sphericity of particle is high.

4. Reason of forming internal pores in particle of powder
Internal pores in particle of powder are formed in gas atomization process. Inert gas that can’t be dissolved in metal, enter into atomized fused drops. A mass of cold gas cool fused drops rapidly, internal pores are formed in concretionary particles. 

The unique technology “Rapid Atomization”that developed by VTECH, atomize metal liquid with very low volume of gas and thermal-flame. Doing that can reduce gas impurities in powder, and also give adequate balling time to avoid from shaping internal pores.
